In the recent Claremont SAU6 deliberative session, a seemingly innocuous warrant article on Open Enrollment was defended by progressives and the administration as essential. When (recently sworn in) Councilor Cogswell described the evils of true Open Enrollment in utterly socialist terms, I smelled a rat.
His description of not letting “our” money leave Claremont was particularly telling. Who exactly is contained within his “our”? It certainly does not include parents and kids. But I suspect “our” does include the pension fund administrator and the SAU administration.
In the late 1970’s, I remember seeing a “newscast” of drunk thugs with sledgehammers outside a political convention in Michigan, wantonly pounding on a late model Toyota. They too professed similar sentiments as Councilor Chris. Even in elementary school it was obvious to me that “our” money did not include the customer or his family at all. This was my first contact with the public display of Entitlement. I have suffered many such displays since then, Cogswell is only the latest, albeit locally controlled, example (though he used words not a sledgehammer).
Three decades later the Generous Mother of GM went bankrupt and was illegally routed around bankruptcy court by Obama. He reconstituted the company as Government Motors, expanded the union pension fund proportion of the remaining balance sheet, and wiped out the shareholders equity entirely. Thanks coach O.
If the analogy holds, I wonder if such a collapse is the councilors desired outcome?
Fortunately for parents and voters, The Bartlett Center for Public Policy has published a brief on the details of Open Enrollment.
I believe this addresses parent and kids concerns, as well as any monopoly entitlement arguments the councilor put forth.
For the first time in over a decade, Claremont voters will have a real choice in the voting booth this March.
Please remember to save the last dance for the ones that brung you.
I suggest voting against the misnamed Open Enrollment warrant article. SAU6 is not a prison colony.
