House Democrats Stand Against Education Freedom
Concord, NH – House Majority Leader Jason Osborne (R-Auburn) released the following statement after the House voted on HB1665, relative to student eligibility for education freedom accounts and the scholarship organization’s costs of administering the program, extending phase-out grants for education freedom accounts, and revising the definitions of average daily membership in attendance and average daily membership in residence.
“Today, House Democrats once again showed their true colors by denying countless children the chance to get the best education possible. By opposing the expansion of the wildly successful Education Freedom Account program, they have made it clear that they prioritize institutions over the well-being of our children. HB1665 was a golden opportunity to give over half of our state’s children the flexibility to reach their true potential, but Democrats chose to stand against what is best for kids.”
“New Hampshire’s Education Freedom Account program is not just a local success; it is rated as the most effective and popular education choice program in the entire country. Despite this, Democrats have repeatedly attempted to dismantle the program. Giving more Granite State children the opportunity to benefit from EFAs remains one of our top priorities, and we will continue to fight for every student’s right to an education that suits their unique needs.”

| House Republicans and Friends Across New Hampshire, This past week, House Republicans once again showed up and stood together to protect your elections and your wallets. We passed SB383, relative to local tax caps. As many town and school budgets unsustainably grow at the expense of taxpayers, this bill enables towns and school district to responsibly propose budgets that track with data such as inflation and population changes. This will help to make sure that local spending is fiscally responsible, ensuring your property taxes are calculated with reason and not driven by reckless spending increases. Another imperatively important action was indefinitely postponing SB537, allowing the processing of absentee ballots. This completely unnecessary bill would have been a gateway to requiring the processing of absentee ballots and mandated an election process created only for COVID-19 due to an influx of absentee ballots- which have since returned to normal levels. This bill was opposed by the New Hampshire Clerk’s Association, and during the hearing for this bill, no one could say why such a bill was needed. In fact, even Clerks who are in favor of preprocessing options opposed the bill, seeing the danger and issues that the bill posed. I concur with Chairman Berry’s statement that, “Opening absentee ballots before election day invites the opportunity for errors, degrades the election process, and turns Election Day into Election Weekend.” Thankfully, House Republicans shut down this preposterous and dangerous Democrat proposal that would have eroded trust and integrity in our elections. |

| MESSAGE FROM THE MAJORITY LEADER House Republicans and Friends Across New Hampshire, As yet another Tax Day has come and gone, I couldn’t help but reflect on one of the legislature’s standout accomplishments over the past four years: the phase-out and eventual repeal of the Interest and Dividends Tax. Anyone who saves for retirement can celebrate that come January 1, 2025, your retirement savings are tax-free at the state level thanks to responsible Republican fiscal management. However, there are plenty of members on the other side of the aisle who have already started launching a barrage of attacks against this achievement, trying to reinstate the tax and establish a wider-reaching income tax in the future. Just this week, a House Democrat declared that an income tax would be “more fair.” Republicans have already slammed the door on one Democrat led proposal to reimpose the I&D tax, and Democrats have refused to commit to protecting taxpayers in the future. The only thing standing between Granite Staters and an income tax is Republican control at the State House. It is crucial to remain vigilant against attempts from Democrats to undermine our progress. Despite their rhetoric, we’ve proven responsible fiscal management and low taxes benefit all Granite Staters. House Republicans will stand firm in our commitment to safeguarding New Hampshire’s economic prosperity and continue fighting for Granite State taxpayers. |
