The Tool the Committee Should Be Using Before March
To my fellow members of the Sullivan County GOP.

We put real effort into knocking doors and turning out votes, and far less into the thing that quietly decides most local races before anyone knocks a door: who controls the information. A tool now sitting on every laptop can change that, and we should build it into our work between now and the March elections.

Start with Claremont. The school district opened the year with a deficit it could not measure for weeks, finally confirmed at $5.01 million. To keep the doors open, the board borrowed $4 million against state aid that had not yet arrived, cash fell below $200,000 against a budget near $39 million, thirty-nine positions were cut, and the superintendent resigned. Every one of those facts came from documents the district was already required to publish under the Right-to-Know law. The information was never hidden. It was simply unreadable.

Is Education Fungible?
When one gallon of gas equals another, but one child’s learning doesn’t equal the next, what does “cost per student” really mean?

What Does Fungible Mean?

When something is fungible, it means one unit can be substituted for another unit.

Think about buying milk at Market Basket or Hannaford. A gallon of whole milk is a gallon of whole milk. If Market Basket charges $3.49 and Hannaford charges $3.79, you know exactly what you’re getting at each store. The milk at one store will work just as well in your cereal as the milk from the other.

The argument in one breath

New Hampshire keeps spending more and getting the same results. That’s not a money problem; it’s a design problem. Fix three things: make fairness about learning, not dollars; stop paying schools up-front for promises and start paying after results; narrow schools to what’s mandatory and move everything else out.

Give Me Sports or Give Me Death!
At the recent Claremont school board meetings, two groups showed up in force. On one side were parents who spoke about academic rigor, trades training, and the desperate need for better outcomes in math, science, and reading. On the other side, far louder, were parents and students pleading for the preservation of sports and extracurricular activities. Judging by the passion in the room, you might conclude that Friday night lights, not literacy, are the real core mission of public education.
